How to treat cancer has long been a major challenge for medical scientists. Now, a new technology may take humanity one step closer to curing cancer. Scientists have invented a nanomachine that can precisely drill through and kill cancer cells.
This is a nano-scale micro-machine that can rotate like a drill, powered by light energy, and is extremely fast. It can drill through the lining of a cell and kill a cancer cell in just 60 seconds.
Tests for the study were conducted at Durham University in the UK. The researchers spent 1-3 minutes using the nano-machine to drill through the cell membrane of a human prostate cell, completely killing the cell. The study was published in the journal Nature.
Nanomachines could effectively fight a range of cancers, including those that are currently resistant to treatment.
Dr. Robert Pal of Durham University believes that nanomachines could be effective in fighting a range of cancers, including those that are currently untreatable. He said: "We are working hard to realise our aspirations, even if nanomachines are used to target cancer cells such as breast tumours and cutaneous melanoma, including cells that are resistant to existing chemotherapy. Once this technology is developed, it could provide direction for non-invasive cancer treatment and greatly improve cancer survival rates worldwide for the benefit of patients."
When activated, the motors on the machine can be rotated to drill into designated cells. Experiments at the university have shown that nanomachines can also find designated cells but do not drill in, waiting for activation before drilling. They found that nanomachines need to be rotated 2-3 million times per second to enter cells.
